I wanted to discuss with you why gut dysfunction is so critical to address.
We all know now that disease starts in the gut. But, some people may not know exactly what the gut is and why it’s so important. I wanted to help clarify.
Here’s some numbers as to why the gut is so important:
- The microflora (bacteria in the gut) outnumber our human cells 10-to-1.
- The microbial DNA outnumbers our own DNA 100-to-1.
- The gut houses 75% of all the neurotransmitters in your body (how your cells carry out functions).
- ⅔ of your immune tissue is in your gut (the main line of defense to foreign invaders).
This shows how important it is to have a healthy gut, but this is one of the biggest issues patients deal with and don’t even realize.
The answer to this is not just throwing more probiotics in and hoping it balances out. If the gut isn’t functioning properly, then the neurotransmitters aren’t either. This is what causes disease. This is why they call the gut the “second brain”. It’s importance to the body is vital.

We hear many things all the time – Food sensitivities, Irritable bowel, Leaky Gut. Most people either don’t know that they have it or don’t know that there’s things you can do to fix it.
To know how to take care of the gut, we need to know what causes the gut dysfunction. This is where functional medicine comes in.
We need to address the interconnection between digestion, absorption, your microbiome, permeability of your digestive tract, your immune system, inflammation, and ultimately how your nervous system is functioning and how it ties everything together.
